It’s making my head hurt but there’s a lot of fascinating stuff. Found an awesome way to tune my 335i, think I’m gonna pull the trigger. I’m a tuning noob, do you guys have any tuning experience? (this is oppo, I’m sure many of you do)
It’s pretty interesting, there’s a guy working with a company that developed a tune for the N54 engine that can be flashed via an app available on android devices. I can easily switch tunes, run logs, troubleshoot, read DME codes, etc. I’m not going all out with the car unless I get an LSD, so i’ll probably put together a custom map and run a bigger intercooler, charge pipe, and oil catch can. Just fix the weaker points of the car. Combined with the extra boost I’m sure this will have my car running very very quickly.

Consult Diablosport before doing anything else. They have a full line of OBD-II plug and play tuners, and they have amazing support.
I have a trinity for the HEMIWagon because Ill soon be swapping to an LSD and changing tire sizes (need to change the computer info to avoid CELs left and right).
The tuners have a million benefits, and while I do have bluetooth OBD-II readers fo clearing codes, the tuner can connect to your computer for greater flexibility and data logging when a tune isnt working properly.

The benefit with doing like this is that it’s a fraction of the cost for me to accomplish exactly what I want.

The product is developed/run by a pretty reputable shop. The process in itself is fairly simple too. I'm just gonna run the preset maps they have already created until I actually know enough/have a real shop help me create a proper tune for my car.

okay, i was understanding you wanted to make your own tune files. which can get very expensive if you fuck up.
running preset maps is what most ppl do anyways. after you finish gettign all the parts you want, take it to get tuned by a good local shop. that way it optimised for the altitude and climate and everything already.

Just remember, high boost and timing advance are not friends. I wouldn’t recommend turning anything up without a way to monitor EGTs and AFR closely.

I’m not planning on running very high boost, on the n54 it’ll run ~8psi stock, and has virtually no lag at all. The N54 being used in the 335is and 1M shows that the stock engine can safely handle much more boost, but I’m not gonna be running higher than stage 1, so I’m not anticipating anything more than ~15psi. I’m gonna be running logs for the first 100 or so miles to detect any weak points in my set up.

I took mine to a guy who does dyno tunes and its directly on my ecu. I know a lot of people go with accessports and do e-tunes

If you want the car to last, go conservative and start with all the boring mods. Come up with a new/better PCV system, upgrade the clutch, fix anything worn/broken, etc. It’s not sexy, but it will save you tons of money in the long run. Pay attention to things like oil analyses, which filters are best for your application, wear indications, and such. Stock parts on modern engines are very efficient compared to years past, so don’t buy into claims that a cold air intake can make 25+ hp by itself or any of that nonsense. Only upgrade what you need to in order to support your power goals.
Any schmuck can make power. Not many can make it last.

I’ve always thought the term ‘tuning’ slightly ambiguous. One of my cars is tuned, an ECU remap done by a company that does just that. Otherwise using my own car as a tuning testbed for so that I can learn to ‘tune’ sounds like a horrible way to break something expensive. unless you have the money to fix what you break I’d just leave it to the pros.

two things:
1) WATCH YOUR CLUTCH. I can almost guarantee that you will need a new clutch sooner rather than later.
I’m at 44K miles, and my clutch hates me as my car makes almost 50% more torque than stock.
2) Speeding tickets. you'll see these more often. budget for them
